According to the Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange (BCBA), the 2024/25 campaign sunflower, despite its challenges, started late, reflecting a lag of 9.5 percentage points in relation to the historical average. Of the 1.85 million hectares planned, only 3.2% were sown, with progress observed, in fact, in the NEA, North-Central Santa Fe and East-Central Entre Ríos. Recent rains in the first region may, therefore, reverse the drought and, consequently, accelerate planting. In the other areas, the intention to sow is, however, increasing, taking advantage of soil moisture.
Regarding wheat, estimated at 6.3 million hectares, 68.8% is in advanced development, with variable moisture conditions. Recent rains should improve conditions in some areas, but the most advanced lots may not compensate for the low macollaje and limited growth. Outbreaks of aphids, thrips and mites were observed in the northwest, with additional impacts caused by low temperatures and lack of moisture. In the center and south, improvement is expected after the rains and the resumption of fertilization.
Barley and corn stock exchange 2023/24
Regarding barley, recent rains have affected the south of the agricultural region, where 63% of the planted area is located. In Southeast Buenos Aires and Southwest Buenos Aires-Sur de La Pampa, low temperatures and frosts have slowed growth and caused leaf damage. Despite this, 92% of the lots are in normal to good condition. In North La Pampa-West Buenos Aires, 45% of the area is in full macollaje, with 52% in regular water condition.
Finally, the 2023/24 corn harvest progressed slowly due to the rains, reaching 98.7% of the area with an average yield of 64.9 qq/Ha. In Córdoba, the yield was 66 qq/Ha, and in the south, 79 qq/Ha. In the Center-North, the pest reduced the yield to 53.1 qq/Ha, with unharvested areas. The production projection is 46.5 million tons.
