EUROPE: drought returns to western and southern growing areas

Rainy weather favored winter crops in Central and Eastern Europe, but caused delays in fieldwork as well as localized flooding. The month-long wet weather pattern continued, with moderate to heavy and widespread rainfall (10-100 mm, locally more) recorded from France and northern Spain eastwards into Lithuania, Poland, Hungary and the western Balkans and the north.

Wet conditions alleviated drought in western and southern growing areas and increased moisture supply for winter crops in central and northern Europe. However, the harvest of the summer crop was delayed in places where rains were heaviest.

Torrential rains (100-450 mm) were observed in western Croatia and surrounding areas, causing flooding and damage to infrastructure; Likewise, weekly values approached or exceeded 150 mm in Switzerland, western and southern Italy, as well as southwestern Serbia.

On the other hand, the predominantly dry climate favored fieldwork in central and southern Spain, the lower Danube valley and Greece.

Cool weather remained across most of Europe, with temperatures during the monitoring period averaging 2 to 5°C below normal almost everywhere except the southeastern portions of the continent (up to 4°C above normal). .
