Fertilizers: Brazilian imports reach record

Brazil imported more than 13 million tons in the first five months of the year, according to this month's Logistics Bulletin from Conab (National Supply Company). The result represents the largest volume in the historical series, which has been calculated since 2011, indicating the good capitalization of Brazilian rural producers.

“With very remunerative prices on the international and domestic market, producers took advantage of the favorable exchange ratio for some agricultural products, resorting to advance purchase operations in order to guarantee the future of activities”, says a statement from Conab.

According to the Bulletin, the states of Mato Grosso, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Goiás were responsible for importing 8.8 million tons, together meaning a volume of 67%: “It is worth highlighting that Bahia practically doubled the import volume of fertilizers in the first half of the year, indicating greater investment by producers in their crops, also a result of favorable prices for the main commodities”.

In this sense, Bahians also stood out with their exports: there were US$ 2.3 billion in agricultural products originating in Bahia in 2020. “The commodities that stood out in the trade balance were the cultivation of conilon coffee in the south and Arabica coffee in the South Center; cotton, soybeans and corn first harvest in the far west; and corn third harvest in northeastern Bahia. In total, 5.4 million tons of agricultural products were exported from the production of cotton (including feather), coffee (in grains and ground), corn and soybeans (grain, bran and oil)”, concludes Conab.
