The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued this Sunday (21) a new orange alert for intense rain in 10 Brazilian states. The orange alert is the second on the scale used by Inmet, which varies between yellow (potential danger), orange (danger) and red (great danger), says a note from “Agência Brasil”.
Furthermore, the orange alert, which means a dangerous situation for intense rain and winds, applies to the states of Acre, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Pará and Rondônia. This alert is valid until this Monday (22). In these regions, accumulated rainfall can reach 100 mm.
The only states of Amapá, Alagoas, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul and Sergipe are not on alert for rain. However, the other Brazilian states and the Federal District are on yellow alert.
On Saturday (20), heavy rains caused deaths in the state of São Paulo. A 60-year-old woman, who was on the beach, died after being struck by lightning in the city of Praia Grande (SP). In Sorocaba, another person died after having their car swept away by the floodwaters.
Finally, in Rio Grande do Sul, the storm that occurred last Tuesday (16) left almost 1 million people without power. According to the latest bulletin, released by the government this morning, more than 30 thousand CEEE Equatorial customers and another 53 thousand RGE Sul customers remain without electricity.
