Japan officially announced this Friday (20) the end of the embargo on exports of chicken meat and eggs produced in Mato Grosso do Sul. The measure is the result of joint action between the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Government, through the Semadesc and Iagro in control of the confirmed and isolated case of bird flu on a rural property in Bonito.
“Iagro, together with Mapa, took all sanitary measures in an agile manner, managing to carry out due control and closure of this outbreak practically in two, three days. Even so, Japan, as it had already done in Santa Catarina, suspended imports of chicken meat from Mato Grosso do Sul”, explains the head of Semadesc, Jaime Verruck.
The secretary announced that the case was closed. He reported that global health authorities and the Japanese government have confirmed it. Thus, companies can resume exporting to the Japanese market, as the embargo has been lifted.
Until August 2023, the Japanese market represented 19% of total chicken meat exports produced in Mato Grosso do Sul.
“It is the second largest market after China, so if [the embargo] were to continue, there could be an impact on poultry farming in our State. But this did not happen, because during this period, this production from Mato Grosso was reallocated to other markets”, commented Jaime.
The head of Semadesc continues saying that “this situation shows that bird flu is present in the Brazilian economy today. There are more than 103 cases, none of them in a commercial herd, this is important to highlight. So far, the Brazilian health authorities have been efficient in dealing with these cases very quickly and in a very transparent manner.”
