Russia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are now in "direct confrontation", the Kremlin said, as the US-led alliance celebrates its 75th anniversary on Thursday. Furthermore, the successive waves of expansion of the Organization to the east constitute a fixation of President Vladimir Putin, who declaredly went to war in Ukraine two years ago with the aim of preventing the alliance from approaching Russia's borders. However, the war served to galvanize NATO, which, in turn, expanded again to include Finland and Sweden.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed to reporters that relations had now evolved to a level of direct confrontation. Furthermore, he said that NATO is already involved in the Ukraine conflict and expanding its military infrastructure towards Russian borders.

Putin has repeatedly said that Russia was deceived by the West after the Cold War, as Moscow's alliance with the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, but NATO advanced eastward, incorporating former members of the pact and three Baltic states that were part of it. of the Soviet Union.

The West rejects this version. They claim that NATO is a defensive alliance, democratically chosen by former communists after decades of rule.

NATO supports Ukraine against Russia, offering weapons, training and intelligence for its defense in the face of Russian aggression.

Russia says this makes NATO a de facto party to the conflict. Putin warned in February that a Russia-NATO confrontation could lead to World War III, highlighting its global severity.
