Italian farmers oppose EU-Mercosul agreement, says minister

Italy's agricultural sector is strongly opposed to the European Commission's trade deal with the South American group of Mercosul in June, Italian Agriculture Minister Gian Marco Centinaio said on Monday.

"We expressed strong concern," Centinaio told reporters in Brussels.

He said he believes that the Italian government will oppose the agreement, which requires the vote of most EU countries to be approved.

He said the agreement was a "weapon aimed at the head" of the Italian agricultural sector, since it offered no guarantees.

"There will be an invasion of products," said Centinaio, who is a close ally of the far-right deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini.
