US and China to resume trade talks

A White House official said the United States (US) and China will resume ministerial-level trade talks in Washington next week.

On Tuesday, White House Foreign Trade Adviser Peter Navarro said the US representative would meet Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on October 10.

These will be the first ministerial-level negotiations since the meetings held in Shanghai in July. Liu is due to meet with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Washington and Beijing have imposed higher and higher tariffs on each other and now the trade dispute is impacting their economies.

US President Donald Trump is eager to ask China to buy more US agricultural products. This has led to speculation that the two sides will discuss a temporary agreement on trade in agricultural goods. Some hardliners under the Trump administration, however, want a broader deal reached, also covering alleged Chinese violations of intellectual property rights.
