Brazil reaches the opening of 60 markets for agricultural products

Brazil has reached the mark of 60 open foreign markets for agricultural products since January 2019. The most recent is the authorization of establishments for the sale of dairy products to Thailand, as announced on Friday (22), Minister Tereza Cristina (Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) during a webinar on opportunities and perspectives for the agricultural sector during the coronavirus pandemic, promoted by the Engineering Institute.

Among other products that will be exported are melon to China (the first Brazilian fruit for the Asian country), baru nut to South Korea, sesame to India, Brazil nut to Saudi Arabia and poultry genetic material to several countries.

“The Ministry of Agriculture, in the international area, opted for the opening of more markets, but also for the diversification of products”, emphasizes the minister, emphasizing that the export basket should not be concentrated only in soy, corn, meats and sugar cane .

Agribusiness exports reached record levels in April, exceeding the US $ 10 billion barrier for the first time in the month. The previous record for foreign sales this month occurred in April 2013, when exports totaled US $ 9.65 billion. The figure last month ($ 10.22 billion) was 25% higher compared to April 2019 ($ 8.18 billion).

The record was mainly due to the increase in shipments of soybeans, which grew 73.4%, with 16.3 million tons. China was the main importer of the product, with the purchase of 11.79 million tons or 72.3% of the total exported quantity.

The minister emphasizes that the priority is always to guarantee the supply of food and other agricultural products in the domestic market. Thus, he points out, that the expansion of exports will not be done without privileging the domestic demand in Brazil. “We are monitoring what we harvest, what we sell. This monitoring is fundamental for Brazil's food security and also for the fulfillment of our trade agreements ”, he says.

According to Tereza Cristina, there is no risk of food shortages in the Brazilian market.

After the new coronavirus pandemic, the minister predicts that countries should become more protectionist, closing their markets to foreign products. To continue expanding in the international market, Brazil, according to Tereza Cristina, should advance in the areas of plant and animal health and traceability to maintain the confidence of importers, in addition to the parties finding balance.

“Brazil already produces abundantly and with a lot of quality. We have to attach more Brazilian states to this excellence ”, he says, citing work that has been developed by Mapa with rural producers in the semiarid region.

Another point to be overcome, according to the minister, is transportation logistics, and it is necessary to seek ways to make the flow of agricultural production cheaper and more effective.
