The port of Constance in Romania has the capacity to handle extra grain cargo from Ukraine until mid-August. The route has been the main alternative export route for Ukrainian agricultural commodities since the emergence of uncertainty over the extension of the Black Sea grain agreement.

Port operators are also looking to increase capacity. Comvex doubled its barge unloading capacity last year. Freight logistics group TTS completed the acquisition of Decirom – the solid bulk cargo operator at the port of Constance – earlier this month, and said it will invest 10 million euros (US$ 11.12 million) to increase its operational speed by 2024.

Ukraine is also increasing capacity at its ports of Reni and Izmail on the Danube. Talks are being held with railcar operators about a new charging system at the Vadul Siret-Dornesti Ukrainian-Romanian border.
