In 2021, Brazilian demand for fertilizers was at a record high, even with a strong increase in average prices, especially in the last semester. One of the factors that can be explained is the increase in fuel prices on the world stage, the uncertainties about the supply of important players such as China and Russia in this market, as well as the strong Brazilian demand.

According to the Conab Logistics Bulletin, in December 2021, the average price of fertilizers reached its highest value at US$/tonne, of US$ 534.28, almost double the 05-year average of US$ 284.78 and above of the 2021 average, which was US$ 350.75/tonne. According to the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), nitrogen and potassium fertilizers were responsible for the biggest increases, as they reached US$ 489.24 and 530.19/tonne, respectively, in December 2021.

Last year Brazil imported 41.6 million tons from January to December. In the previous year there were 34.2 million tons and in 2017 Brazil imported half of that volume, with 28.6 million tons.

The main fertilizer importing state was Mato Grosso, the country's main grain producer, importing around 8.0 million tons of fertilizers, the majority of which through the ports of Santos and Paranaguá, which demands high transportation costs. , given the distance over 2000 km, generating an intense flow of trucks, since, according to ANTT, the main mode of transporting fertilizers is still by road, thus increasing the need for multimodality for this sector as well.

Next, completing the five largest importers are Rio Grande do Sul (6.6 million/ton), Paraná (5.4), São Paulo (4.3) and Minas Gerais (3.8). The majority arrived through the Port of Santos (SP), which concentrated around 45%. Next comes Paranaguá (PR) with just over 20% and Santarém (PA), with 12%.
