India is expected to produce 28.9 million bales of cotton (6.29 million tonnes) in the 2020/21 season, which begins August 1, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) attache in Mumbai said. The volume represents a drop of 1.36% compared to the attaché's own estimate for 2019/20, of 29.3 million bales (6.38 million tons), and 5.24% compared to the USDA's official forecast for 2019/20, of 30.5 million bales (6.64 million t).
According to the attaché, the lower production estimate is due to the harvested area, which should fall to 12.9 million hectares. In 2019/20, the harvested area was 13.3 million hectares. The official USDA projection for 2020/21 is even lower, at 12.5 million hectares.
The attaché's expectation for domestic consumption in India is 23 million bales (5 million t) in 2020/21, compared to 21 million bales (4.57 million t) in 2019/20. Exports are expected to total 3.5 million bales (762 thousand tons), an increase of 16.7% compared to the 2019/20 cycle. The USDA's official forecast is for exports of 4.5 million bales (979,940 t).
