Producers need to be aware of consumer habits

After more than three decades of growth above Brazil's general economic market, the food sector has spent the last two years in decline due to the recession experienced by the country. As a result, businesspeople will need to read the Brazilian consumer. The topic will be presented by the Foodservice market consultant and researcher, Sérgio Molinari, founder of Food Consulting and Food Experts, on the afternoon of Friday, February 17th, during the twenty-seventh Official Opening of the Rice Harvest, in Cachoeirinha ( LOL).

According to the expert, who will give the lecture “Scenarios and Perspectives of the Brazilian Food Market”, the new fact is that the Brazilian businessman linked to the food sector has never had to prepare for a time when the market was adverse. “Several companies have found it difficult to get through this period and some others have been successful. Let's talk about the common factors of companies that are doing well right now, that is, discuss success factors even in the midst of the crisis”, he highlights.

Molinari states that it is also necessary to analyze what the food market will be like after the crisis and what the resumption of growth in the sector will be like. More than that, it is necessary to understand how the consumer will behave with this resumption of the positive cycle. “The discussion is that the market will heat up again but it will not be the same as we have known for years. Who is the new food consumer in Brazil? What transformations are we already experiencing in the country and which are likely to become more pronounced in the coming years? Consequently, how do companies that supply this market have to adapt to this new moment?”, he asks.

Regarding the role of the producer in this scenario, the founder of Food Consulting and Food Experts reinforces that they need to see themselves within an interconnected chain and also adapt to what the consumer is demanding. “The food producer has to see himself as a link, he is not an autonomous agent who can think of his business separately from the rest of the chain. The producer also needs to visualize where the consumption habit is going so that he can understand what to produce and so as not to be isolated in the market by offering something that the consumer is already looking for in another way”, he explains.

The lecture will be moderated by the associate professor of the Department of Animal Science at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and advisor of the Postgraduate Programs in Animal Science and Food Technology, Leila Picolli. The Official Opening of the Rice Harvest takes place at the Rice Experimental Station, of the Rio Grandense do Arroz Institute (Irga). The event is organized by the Federation of Rice Growers Associations of Rio Grande do Sul (Federarroz). More information can be obtained on the website www.colhetadoarroz.com.br.
