Syngenta calls for rapid approval of the new seed law in Argentina

The president of Syngenta for South Latin America, Antônio Aracre, states that Argentina needs a new law that protects seed intellectual property. Speaking exclusively to Portal Agrolink, the executive pointed out that around 80% of producers in that country use their own seeds without paying for the technology.

The bill being discussed by members of the government, deputies, farmers and seed producers seeks legislation that harms the parties as little as possible. If approved before the next harvest, Aracre predicts that investments in the biotechnology sector will take off in Argentina.

“We have a law that is over 40 years old. In all this time there has been a brutal transformation of technology. We need to generate a good law, which can be valid for another 20 years and generate a significant number of new jobs,” projects Aracre. He foresees the creation of 100,000 jobs in the soy chain alone with a law that better remunerates companies for research and development.
