US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he hopes there will be substantial negotiations between the United States and China over trade this weekend, and said tariffs cannot go beyond 145%.
“It can’t go any higher. It’s at 145%, so we know it’s going to come down,” Trump said. “I think it’s a very friendly meeting. They’re looking forward to doing this in a graceful way.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and chief trade negotiator Jamieson Greer will meet with China's economic representative He Lifeng in Switzerland this weekend. The meeting is aimed at starting discussions that could represent the first step toward resolving a trade war that is currently roiling the global economy.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about negotiations with China. He said the Asian country “very much wants to make a deal” and “has a lot more to gain than the United States, in some ways.” Trump also reiterated his desire to see China open up its economy and called China’s current trade surplus with the United States “unacceptable.”
When asked about the possibility of speaking directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping after the talks, Trump said, “Maybe, yeah, absolutely.” He set a positive tone for the weekend’s talks, saying, “I think we’re going to have a good weekend with China. I think they’re going to be substantial. China wants to do something, and right now they need to do it.”
