US to expand corn acreage and reduce soybean acreage in 2025

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released this Tuesday (1st) the Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin, with updated data on the progress of crops in the country as of June 29. According to the report, 8% of the national corn harvest had reached the earing stage, two percentage points lower than that recorded in the same period in 2024, but two points above the average of the last five years.

The bulletin reports that analysts rated 73% of the corn crop as in good or excellent condition. This represents a three percentage point increase compared to the previous week. In Iowa, the main producing state, they considered 85% of the crop within this same quality range.

Corn plantings increase in the US, while soybean acreage declines

Corn planted area in 2025 is estimated at 95.2 million acres. This volume represents an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. In absolute terms, the increase corresponds to 4.61 million acres. According to the USDA, this volume represents the third-largest planted area in the United States since 1944. The area harvested for grain is expected to reach 86.8 million acres, also 5% higher than the previous year. In 41 of the 48 states assessed, corn planted area increased or remained stable.

Regarding soybeans, the USDA reported that 94% of soybean crops had emerged by the end of June, the same as the previous year but one percentage point below the five-year average. The report indicates that 17% of soybeans were in the flowering stage, one percentage point lower than in 2024 but one percentage point above the historical average. Approximately 3% of soybean plants had already formed pods, the same percentage as the same period last year and one percentage point above the average.

Evaluators rated 66% of the soybean crop as good or excellent, unchanged from the previous week. Soybean planted area in 2025 is estimated at 83.4 million acres, a decrease of 4% compared to last year. In 25 of the 29 states surveyed, planted area decreased or remained stable.
