Aboissa at the FT Commodities Americas Summit 2019

Last week Aboissa participated in the FT Commodities Americas Summit 2019, in Rio de Janeiro, which brought together several politicians and leaders to discuss the challenges that will be faced by the Latin American market in the coming decades.

Among the topics discussed are:

 – Soy – The production that took over the world: It showed the growth of soybeans on the market and how excessive cultivation is contributing to deforestation, pricing and the moratorium on the grain.

View from the top: Discussion with Vale's CFO: Commented on the Brumadinho and Mariana disasters and what can be expected from Vale in the coming years.

– Rebuilding trust in the mining sector: “Sustainability” was the word that took over this topic, being related, once again, to the Brumadinho and Mariana disasters.

– The clean energy transition in the Americas: One of the main themes discussed was that the clean energy market in Brazil depends greatly on the acceptance of
consumer, there needs to be a re-education of this consumption to look for new sources of energy. Today Brazil suffers from uncompetitive alternatives such as electric cars, and solar and wind energy options are relatively expensive.

– New Gas market in Brazil: Brazil's natural gas sector is poised for radical reform as President Jair Bolsonaro's government wants to reduce energy costs. In a scenario of falling global prices and the promise of more supply from pre-salt offshore oil and gas deposits, it is an attractive prospect. But creating a new gas market in Brazil will not be easy. Monopolies will have to end and infrastructure will have to be updated.

– Problems in the coffee market?: Low international prices over the last decade are causing many farmers in Central and South America to abandon their farms, fueling fears of a crisis in the sector. Facing this problem will not be easy and will have an impact on Brazil, which is responsible for a quarter of global production.

– Keynote: Commodities in Brazil: It was mainly talked about the alliance between Mercosur and the European Union and other Brazilian agreements that are being made and continue to evolve.

– Closing of the Debate: The Geopolitics of Commodities: This debate revolved around Jair Bolsonaro's position at the UN and how no one supports the current government; The current situation of the Brazilian economy and what will happen in the coming years; China's relationship with Brazil and the internal relationship of Mercosur countries.
