Gross Value of Corn Production grows by 38,46%

The Gross Value of Production (GPV) of maize recorded growth of 38,46% this year, rising from R$ 3.9 billion in 2016 to R$ 5.4 billion in the current season. The indicator is the monetary expression of the sum of all goods and services produced in agribusiness in a given period of time

To give you an idea, the estimate for the total VBP of Brazilian agriculture in 2017 is calculated at R$ 546.3 billion. This is the best result in the last 27 years, with an amount 5.3% higher than last year, which was R$ 519 billion.

The growth in the value of corn stands out, which this year was 25.7% higher than 2016 (which recorded a negative result). As a parameter, corn production in 2017 should influence the Gross Value of Agricultural Production in Mato Grosso do Sul by up to 8.4%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa).

For the president of the Brazilian Association of Corn Producers (Abramilho), Alysson Paolinelli, the increase in corn VBP this year shows that the crop is gaining good value. For him, this demonstrates that corn continues to be important in agricultural production, gaining market recognition.

Former Minister of Agriculture, Paolinelli emphasizes that it is necessary to have public policies that consolidate this recovery, with production support plans that have clear, long-term rules. “The government needs to support producers because it is agribusiness that has generated most of the wealth in Brazil”, he points out.

Other cultures

In addition to the 234.3 million ton harvest estimated by Conab (National Supply Company), the increase in productivity, in the order of 21%, is another relevant factor in the increase in this year's agricultural VBP. Crops are expected to increase by 11.3% in value, totaling R$ 376.3 billion, with the gross value of the main crops estimated at 69%.

According to the general coordinator of Mapa Studies and Analysis, José Garcia Gasques, most crops have performed better than in 2016. Prices and greater production are mainly responsible for this.
